Having an exact clone is one of the more terrifying concepts in the horror genre. This plot-device was made popular by Invasion of the Body Snatchers way back in the 1950’s. Not being able to know which person real is and who is the copy, the fake, is definitely part of the reason. The word we use for this is doppelganger, which comes from a compound noun in German of doppel (double) and gänger (walker or goer).

There’s a new film exploring this chilling concept, Assimilate, and we have our first look via the trailer. Andi Matichak, of last year’s Halloween, is one of the more notable stars.

The synopsis:

Three friends making a web series about their town discover that their neighbors are being killed and replaced by creatures that are perfect copies of their victims.

Matichak stars alongside Joel Courtney, Calum Worthy and Katherine McNamara. Courtney previously appeared in the sci-fi film Super 8, as well as the smaller horror titles Mercy from 2014 and Don’t Let Me Go from the year prior to that. He was also in the horror television show R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour. Worthy also appeared in The Haunting Hour ,as well R.L. Stine’s Mostly Ghostly and the genre film The Blackburn Asylum. McNamara is probably best known for her role as Sonya in The Maze Runner series of films, but was also in a knock-off of Annabelle called Charlotte. Cam Gigandet will also appear in Assimilate. You can find him in Twlight and Priest.

The cast is directed by John Murlowski. He’s co-writer along with Steven Palmer Peterson. Murlowski has been doing a lot of television, crime dramas and thrillers most recently, but in the past he wrotre and directed Black Cadillac. Back in the early 90’s he also did Amityville: A New Generation.

Gravitas will release Assimilate in select theatres and on VOD May 24th.
