It may only be 15 seconds long, but the first teaser for Nickelodeon’s reboot of Are You Afraid of the Dark? was just enough of a taste to launch me back into the 90s and make the spooky kid in me ridiculously happy. If you also grew up on the original Are You Afraid of the Dark? then you’ll recognize the elements that really matter are all here: a campfire in the woods, a handful of “midnight dust” (which was apparently just non-dairy creamer), the iconic title card, and, of course, one key phrase:
Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, I call this story…
All that’s missing is a little dash of the original theme music.
Are You Afraid of the Dark? is coming back to us as a miniseries, in the form of three one-hour episodes. In this teaser we catch some glimpses of what tale this new group of spooky storytellers have cooked up. All we know so far is that the story is about “The Carnival of Doom”, and it includes at least one garish clown that hearkens back to the Crimson Clown of our collective 90s nightmares. According to Entertainment Weekly, one key difference to this new series is that “the events of the tale soon begin coming to life”.
The new of Midnight Society was previously announced and named: Gavin (Sam Ashe Arnold, Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever.), Louise (Tamara Smart, Artemis Fowl), Akiko (Miya Cech, Rim of the World), Rachel (Lyliana Wray, Black-ish) and Graham (Jeremy Taylor, It). No hint so far as to whether any members of the original Midnight Society might make any cameos (These days Gary (Ross Hull) is a meteorologist in Canada).
