There are two types of people who watch the Superbowl. The football obsessed and everyone curious to see the year’s most anticipated car commercials tv ad spots and movie trailers. While there was some speculation that we may finally receive an IT: Chapter 2 trailer, the highlight of the evening was Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

Not only were eager fans given a quick peek behind the curtain earlier in the week with the film’s first teaser poster, Superbowl weekend brought us four(!) teaser spots for André’ Øvredal’s forthcoming adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark, as well as a lengthy update to the official synopsis!

New Synopsis:

It’s l968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying tome.

Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark is directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe) and written by (a whole ton of people! including) John August (Frankenweenie) Daniel & Kevin Hageman (The Lego Movie), Guillermo del Toro (Cronos) who also holds a producing credit. The film is currently scheduled for release August 9th, 2019 and stars Zoe Colletti (Annie), Michael Garza (Wayward Pines), Gabriel Rush (Moonrise Kingdom), and Kathleen Pollard (The Strain). Rounding out the cast are Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, Austin Zajur, and Natalie Ganzhorn.
