Snakes, cults, and Academy Award winner Olivia Coleman. The trailer for a new, creepy cult horror Them That Follow has all the goods and then some.

Them That Follow is the feature debut of writing/directing duo Brittany Poulton & Dan Madison Savage. The film looks to tell the tale of a family that’s part of a religious group, deep in the Appalachia woods. And like most cults, there’s most likely something more sinister brewing beneath the surface.

Set deep in the wilds of Appalachia, where believers handle death-dealing snakes to prove themselves before God, Them That Follow tells the story of a pastor’s daughter who holds a secret that threatens to tear her community apart.

First impressions of the trailer present us with a gritty and grounded approach to the cult sub-genre, focusing more on atmosphere and character performances than supernatural elements. It’s very effective in the trailer, selling us on the ensemble cast, including a mixture of fresh faces and veterans such as: Olivia Coleman (The Favourite), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), Lewis Pullman (Bad Times at the El Royale), Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight), and more. While I’m excited about the whole cast, Goggins as a crazy cult pastor gives me tingles.

Them That Follow premiered at Sundance this year and was met with generally positive reviews praising the films atmosphere, screenplay, and intimate study of the characters. The trailer backs up these claims with powerful imagery of snakes and the volatile emotions of the members of the mountain community. The snakes are constantly referenced with being cleansed, most likely a recurring theme explored in the film that could lead to some squirm-worthy scenes. If you’re afraid of snakes, this movie to be your nightmare!

From Midsommar, to The Endless, to Hereditary, cult horror is definitely hot right now. Will Poulton & Savages debut land on that list as well? We’ll have to find out when Them That Follow hits theaters August 2nd, 2019 later this summer. Let us know your thoughts over on Facebook, Twitter, or Reddit!
