Behold the return to horror of Fairuza Balk in an engaging and dark (but colorful!) home invasion thriller Trespassers. This colorful Argento-esque-looking opus seems like it has all of the possibilities to be a super fun feature, clad in a nice iridescent bow. Backed by beautifully haunting colors our protagonists battle it out in a serendipitous situation, with consequences of life or death. Fairuza Balk of The Craft (1996), Return To Oz (1985), and The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) graces us with another bewitching *heh* performance.
Trespassers is directed by Orson Oblowitz (The Queen of Hollywood Blvd (2017)) and written by Corey Deshon (Shine (2017), Voice (2017))–while Deshon doesn’t have much of a foot dipped in the waters of horror pre-Trespassers, Oblowitz’s The Queen of Hollywood Blvd is a fun revenge/exploitation film. Rounding out the cast is a horror favorite Angela Trimbur (Psychopaths (2017), Trash Fire (2016), and The Final Girls (2015)), as well as Janel Parrish (Pretty Little Liars 2010-’17)), Johnathan Howard (World War Z (2013)), and Carlo Rota (Saw V (2008),The Boondock Saints (1999)).
Two dysfunctional couples rent a modern luxury desert home for the weekend hoping to sort out their messed-up lives. Just as they are about to settle in for a fun night, a neighbour turns up at their front door saying she has car trouble. And that’s when the murderous trouble really starts. Because without knowing it, the four friends have landed slap-bang in the wrong violent place at precisely the wrong bloody time. Hopefully your nerves of steel will hold for one of the most stylish, atmospheric and terror-filled home invasion horrors of them all. (IMDb)
Oblowitz’s second feature seems fit to be a romp and is stacked with an overly decent cast, paired with that ever-entrancing giallo-like light scheme. From what we can see there seems to be quite a few brutal moments to satiate our bloodlust–so at the very least we’ll have those! Oblowitz is no stranger to horror, as his film The Queen of Hollywood Blvd made quite a stir; you can check out our interview with the director here!
Are you going to open the door for Fairuza Balk, and catch this one, or are home invasion thrillers not your thing? Trespassers breaks its way into select theaters and VOD July 12th, 2019.
