If your idea of the future consists of handlebar mustaches, robot strippers, and a cyberpunk Berlin, then you’re in luck!

Well maybe the future is a bit more than just those things, but Duncan Jones’s Mute trailer is here and it was definitely worth the wait. So much buzz was created out of this passion project, once the production for Warcraft had wrapped, Director Duncan Jones had planned to move forward with his spiritual sequel to Moon (2009). Unfortunately, the film was stuck in development hell for years. It wasn’t until the end of 2016 that Jones confirmed the beginning of production. The Director would periodically tweet on-set photos as well as concept art and that only created a stronger interest.

Though his filmography isn’t very long, the projects under his belt are not to be taken lightly. Films like Moon (2009), Source Code (2011), Warcraft (2016) and of course now Mute (2018). Mute stars Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux, and Seyneb Saleh.

The film follows a mute bartender who goes up against his city’s gangsters in an effort to find out what happened to his missing partner. Watch the trailer for Mute above.

Most likely obvious at this point but a part of the overall aesthetic of the film is a love letter to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982). With the incredible neon-lit city and the chilling undertones, I’m positive that nothing but passion was put into this project. During the film’s development, Jones had expressed his desire for Sam Rockwell to reprise his role from Moon in a cameo appearance (which we might see) that was to act as an epilogue for the character, and that the film would be the second installment in a trilogy consisting of Moon, Mute and yet to be announced third film.

Mute will be coming to select theaters as well as Netflix February 23rd, 2018.
