Many have said to go into Ali Abbasi’s latest film, Border, without knowing anything. While that may be true, there’s a new trailer to give us a taste of what to expect from what our own Jonathan Dehaan calls “a morbid, sometimes disgusting fairy tale set in a modern-day Sweden.”
Border is based on a short story by Let the Right One In author John Ajvide Lindqvist. Lindqvist co-wrote Border with Abbasi, bringing another one of his strange, twisted, yet endearing, fantastical love stories to life.
Border’s official synopsis is rather vague as to not give away any of the film’s surprises:
“After a customs officer develops a strange attraction to the suspect she’s investigating, the case’s revelations soon call into question her entire existence.”
The customs officer’s name is Tina (Eva Melander) and this suspect is Vore (Eero Milonoff). According to the trailer, her attraction to Vore is partially due to their similar appearance, something she says is due to a chromosomal deficiency.
Border has made quite a splash in this year’s festival circuit. Besides rave reviews from around the globe, it was awarded Cannes’ Prize of Un Certain Regard. It’s also Sweden’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 2019 Academy Awards.
According to Dehaan’s review, this film is a slow burn that may not be for every horror fan. He said,
“Border is not a typical horror fans movie, but it is chock-full of genre elements and unique, clever uses of those elements. If some of your favourite films bring a level of dark fantasy into real world situations, then Border is definitely for you.”
