The first trailer just dropped for the legendary and seemingly never not working Takashi Miike’s new movie First Love. As expected from the king of Japanese cinema, it seems like it’s going to be gloriously chaotic.

Miike is hands down of of my favorite directors of all time. Not just that, but I’ll go to bat by saying that he is the most versatile and provocative director alive right now. The man has directed over 100 movies, which is something that can be said about very few directors in the history of film. Miike’s ability to juggle going back and forth between genres is unparalleled. One minute he’s making kids movies, and the next he’s making stuff like Visitor Q (2001) which if you haven’t seen by the way please take my advice and do not eat before, during, or after the movie.

Official Synopsis:

The film is the prolific auteur, Takashi Miike, at his most fun and anarchic, a noir-tinged Yakuza film blending genres in the story of a young boxer (Masataka Kubota) and a call girl (Sakurako Konishi), who fall passionately in love while getting innocently caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo.

I don’t think any line in a single one of Miike’s over 100 (yes over 100!) movies sums up his filmography as well as, “everybody kill!” This trailer has it all, a love story, decapitations, and, well a bunch of other stuff, but those are probably the two most important. What Miike is just so masterful at is mixing genre’s, which is exactly what he seems to be doing with First Love. There is a lot going on in this trailer, and even though it’s got the blood of several genres in it, romance seems to be front and center. I’m a sucker for a good romance story, but through in some Yakuza hitmen and a whole lot anarchic violence and you’ve got me double sold.

I’m willing to follow Takashi Miike wherever he wants to take me, so I’m definitely checking this one out on September 27th when it is finally released. How about you?
