Mads Mikkelsen and his cheekbones chiseled by gods are back, this time as an eye-patch-wearing, ass-kicking, once-retired assassin, The Black Kaiser, in Netflix’s new original film, Polar. Did I mention he also owns a French bulldog?

This is the official synopsis from Netflix:

“The world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla, aka The Black Kaiser (Mads Mikkelsen), is settling into retirement when his former employer marks him as a liability to the firm. Against his will, he finds himself back in the game going head to head with an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers who will stop at nothing to have him silenced.”

Looks like his retirement won’t be so relaxing. Not mentioned in the synopsis is Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Vizla’s seemingly-innocent neighbor with a knack for photography. Fortunately for us and unfortunately for her, she gets tangled in his old life and is kidnapped by other assassins for leverage.

The trailer makes Polar look like a mashup of Smokin’ Aces (2006), Red (2010), and John Wick (2014), full of skilled assassins with their own violent methods in murder. Mikkelsen also looks like a character straight out of a Metal Gear Solid game, from the eyepatch to the varying degrees of advanced weaponry. At one point just in the trailer, Mikkelsen shoots machine guns via gloves with laser pointers, and also nails a man’s arms to a wall with a nail gun. Polar will be one bloody, and exhilarating ride.

This film looks like an action-packed, super-stylized, hyper-violent good time. Plus I can’t say no to anything starring Mads Mikkelsen, especially when his grizzled character also owns a French bulldog.

Polar will hit Netflix on January 25th. What do you think of the trailer? Are you ready to see Mads Mikkelsen in all his violent glory? Let us know your thoughts on Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, and in the Horror Fiends of Nightmare on Film Street Facebook group!
