Have you been suffering from a lack of melodramatic murder-mystery in your life? Or perhaps you’re already experiencing anticipatory anxiety now that HBO’s stellar Sharp Objects came to an end on Sunday? Fret no more, because the network that brings some of the best series TV has to offer has finally released the trailer for the highly anticipated (and long-delayed) third season of True Detective. The trailer – which you can check out below – runs only a minute long. But – it offers enough of a tease to whet fans’ appetites until a full-length look is released, presumably later this year.

The action this time around seems to center on just one detective, contrary to the first two seasons which featured two and three, respectively. Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) plays Wayne Hays. We catch glimpses of him in different time periods as he cryptically states things like “my whole brain’s a bunch of missing pieces.” Coupled with shots of him looking grey-haired and stricken with anxiety, one would assume something very bad happened when he was a newbie investigating a case. A brief shot of a ransom note clues us in that girl named Julie has been abducted. And though the time period it’s from is unclear, it seems this might be the main case being dissected throughout the years. The official synopsis doesn’t give many clues, but it goes like this:

The next installment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.

Joining Ali are a few other faces you might recognize: Carmen Ejogo (It Comes at Night), Mamie Gummer (Ricki and the Flash), and Scoot McNairy (Gone Girl, Fargo Season 3). In the director’s chair are Green Room‘s Jeremy Saulnier, creator Nick Pizzolatto, and Daniel Sackheim.

True Detective Season 3 premieres in January on HBO.
