Netflix has released the extremely NSFW trailer for their latest original series, Russian Doll starring Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is the New Black). The series, co-created by Lyonne with Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler, is about Lyonne’s character, Nadia, who is forced to relive the night of her death over and over, each time just as painful as the last.
A woman gets caught in a mysterious loop, repeatedly attending the same party and dying at the end of the night, only to awake the next day unharmed.
The appeal of going back in time and doing things differently in fiction dates all the way back to 1895 when H.G. Wells popularized the concept with his novella The Time Machine. Since then, there have been numerous stories, television shows and movies that have dabbled in the premise of getting a second, third or twentieth chance to make things right. In February of this year, Blumhouse Productions will release Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to the 2017 slasher hit Happy Death Day, about a sorority girl who has to relive the day of her death until she can find out the identity of the killer.
In addition to co-creating and starring in the series, Lyonne, along with Headland have also written and directed a number of episodes. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lyonne had this to say:
“I can’t believe that I got to make it. I feel like Amy, Leslye and I really had a vision for this thing and it’s certainly very close and far beyond anything I could have ever hoped for.”
The cast of Russian Doll also includes Greta Lee (Wayward Pines), Brendan Sexton III (Empire Records), Rebecca Henderson (Westworld) Chloe Sevigny (American Horror Story), and Lyonne’s OITNB co-star Dascha Polanco.
The 8-episode first season of Russian Doll will premiere on Netflix February 1st.
