I think someone at Netflix has a thing for witches. After making waves with The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the streaming giant is adding another original series about witches, magic, and the powers that bind us together. Luckily for us Netflix just happened to drop the trailer. Light your candles and burn some sage, we’re taking a look at Siempre Bruja.
Siempre Bruja stars Colombian actress Angely Gaviria (Pambelé) as Carmen, a 17th century Afro-Colombian Bruja. In order to saver her lover and escape a fiery death, Carmen transports herself to modern-day Cartagena. In order to return the past Carmen must find her place in this new world, using her magic along the way. The ten-episode series is loosely based on the 2015 spanish language novel Yo, Bruja by Isidora Chacón.
Joining Gaviria is a vibrant cast of veteran Columbian actors as well as relative newcomers. The ensemble includes Youtuber Dylan Fuentes (Hermanos y hermanas), telenovela idol Valeria Henriquez (Los Morales), Sofia Araujo (Sinú, río de pasiones), Carlos Quintero (Pickpockets: Maestros del robo), Duban Prado (Narcos), and Lenard Vanderaa. Series directors include Liliana Bocanegra (La Esclava Blanca, Made in Cartagena, Celia) and Mateo Stivelberg (La Esclava Blanca, La Rectora) while Ana Maria Parra (Cuando Vivas Conmigo, La Nocturna) will serve as head writer.
“We’re excited to continue investing in the wonderful content and talent Colombia has to offer, and especially to be working with Caracol, as well as the creators of hit shows such as La Esclava Blanca,” Netflix vice president of International Originals Erik Barmack said in a statement. “Our second Colombian original Siempre Bruja is not only a magnetic young adult story that audiences will love, but also holds a powerful message of empowerment that will connect deeply with members both in Colombia and globally.”
Carmen, a young witch from the past, travels in time to escape burning at the stake. But can she learn how to navigate the new world? University life, dating apps, indoor plumbing… Welcome to 2019, witch.
If I could travel through time to catch Siempre Bruja early, I would. But since I don’t have a stake handy I’ll be catching it on Feburary 1st. Will you? Let us know your thoughts on Twitter, in the official Nightmare on Film Street subreddit, and in the Horror Movie Fiend Club on Facebook!
