After a steady stream of horror originals in 2017, like Gerald’s Game, 1922, and The Babysitter, Netflix is armed and ready with their first horror film of 2018, The Open House. The film takes a twist on the classic creaky floorboards and cobwebbed attics of the typical haunted house film by throwing a big ‘ole FOR SALE sign on it. Watch the first trailer for The Open House, above.
Netflix acquired the film back in November, likely due to poster boy and breakout star of Netflix’s teen sensation 13 Reason’s Why, Dylan Minnette. We horror fiends have been familiar with Minnette for some time; he was the teen lead in Sony’s live-action adaptation of Goosebumps, as well as Screen Gems’ Don’t Breathe.
The Open House follows teenager Logan Wallace (Minnette) and his Naomi, his mother (Piercey Dalton). Following the fathers’ death, the pair opt to get away from it all and stay at a friend’s secluded house in the mountains. The house is currently ‘on the market’, so Logan and Naomi vacate every Sunday to accommodate viewings by potential buyers. Unfortunately, it looks like one such visitor might have decided to secretly make himself at home, and from the trailer, that visitor might not count themselves.. among the living. “You can’t lock out what’s already inside.”
The Open House is written and directed by Suzanne Coote and Matt Angel. The film is produced by Dan Angel and Chip Rosenbloom.
The Open House centers on a teenager (Minnette) and his mother (Piercey Dalton) who find themselves besieged by threatening forces when they move into a new house.
The Open House will land on Netflix streaming January 19th, 2018. Be sure to lock your door before you throw this one on.
