Put down your brooms, witches – we have a birthday party to attend! The first full trailer for Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is here, and darn does it look devilishly good.
Like poor Sabrina Spellman (played by The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Kiernan Shipka), in this trailer exists a duality of darkness and light – to witch or not to witch. Sabrina, upon her 16th birthday, must choose to live the life of a mortal and a happy-go-lucky existence with her friends, or choose to sign the book of Lucifer and become a full-fledged witch, along with all the perks and spells of living magically.
The first half of the trailer is pleasant and upbeat – Sabrina lives a charmed life with highschool sweetheart Harvey Kinkle (My Friend Dahmer‘s Ross Lynch) on her arm, and plays a few Matilda-esque pranks with her bewitching abilities. But things take a turn at her birthday ceremony, when she refuses to sign her life away to live the life of a witch. Poor Sabrina can’t just have her cake and eat it too, because that life still comes a’knocking – with plenty of ghouls, goblins, Evil Dead branches, and catty fellow witches thrown into the mix. It seems you can’t just run away from your problems after all.
Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis play aunts Zelda and Hilda, with Bronson Pinchot playing her high school principal. the 10-episode series from Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is based on the Archie comic book series of the same name and is touted as being much darker in tone than the 1990’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch series starring Melissa Joan Hart.
Don’t hang up your hats just yet. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina debuts later this month on Netflix. There’a still plenty of time to form your coven for an October 26th watch party.
