Merry Christmas horror fiends! Are you ready for another present? Surely you’ve already opened some killer vinyl or funko playthings, but Jordan Peele and Universal Pictures have dropped down the internet chimney to spread a little more holiday cheer with the first official trailer for Us. If you haven’t already found a way to sneak away from your family for two-and-a-half minutes just start coughing right now, calmly excuse yourself, and find a quiet corner to bury your face in your phone.
Details of Us have been pretty sparse but we recently learned in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the film would be a monster movie! “For my second feature, I wanted to create a monster mythology,” Peele told EW. “I wanted to do something that was more firmly in the horror genre but still held on to my love of movies that are twisted but fun”. To get an idea of the Us’s tone, Peele asked star Lupita Nyong’o to watch the following films in preparation for the role: Dead Again, The Shining, The Babadook, It Follows, A Tale of Two Sisters, The Birds, Funny Games, Martyrs, Let the Right One In, and The Sixth Sense. And based on the trailer below, Us is sure to earn its position beside any of those beloved classics.
Set in present day along the iconic Northern California coastline, Us, from Monkeypaw Productions, stars Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson, a woman returning to her beachside childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Black Panther’s Winston Duke), and their two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex) for an idyllic summer getaway.
Haunted by an unexplainable and unresolved trauma from her past and compounded by a string of eerie coincidences, Adelaide feels her paranoia elevate to high-alert as she grows increasingly certain that something bad is going to befall her family.
After spending a tense beach day with their friends, the Tylers (Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Cali Sheldon, Noelle Sheldon), Adelaide and her family return to their vacation home. When darkness falls, the Wilsons discover the silhouette of four figures holding hands as they stand in the driveway. Us pits an endearing American family against a terrifying and uncanny opponent: doppelgängers of themselves.
