Ari Aster’s folk horror film Modsommar, came back to theaters last week with an extended director’s cut. If you missed it, fear not! You can own the director’s cut on September 24th. But here’s the catch: The Midsommar extended director’s cut is exclusive to AppleTV.
According to the iTunes listing, the pre-order of the film includes the following extras, “Your purchase of Modsommar comes with Ari Aster’s extended and unrated Director’s Cut, exclusive to AppleTV. Plus, go behind the scenes with the cast and crew of Midsommar in an exclusive featurette, and watch the creation of Hälsingland in time-lapse footage of the elaborate and meticulous set construction”.
Apple launched its separate Apple TV streaming app, earlier thIs year allowing you to access Apple TV even if you do not own the device. The app is available for download on iOS devices and select Samsung TVs. So if you were hoping to snag a digital copy of Midsommar’s Director’s Cut, it will be through the Apple TV app.
The director’s cut adds 30 minutes with some extended scenes and some scenes not present in the theatrical release. It’s hard to believe anything was held back from the terrifying 147 minutes of the theatrical release, but perhaps we’ll get some clarity on some of the characterization and rituals. Midsommar and the Director’s Cut are available for pre-order now through iTunes and the Apple TV app and will release on September 24th. If you were hoping to own Midsommar but choose not to use Apple priducts, you can purchase the film at most major retailers on VOD on September 24th and a physical release on October 8th. Of course there is still time to catch the Director’s Cut in theaters this week.
