Nearly nine years ago, my future wife and I went on our first “official” date to see the relatively unknown Zombieland. The under-the-radar film, directed by Ruben Fleischer, burst onto the scene with over $102 million in box office returns on a modest $24 million budget. Since it’s surprise success, fans of the film have long-clamored for a sequel. Finally, they may have gotten the news they’ve long been waiting for.
While speaking to Vulture regarding their latest release, Deadpool 2, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed the exciting news. The duo, who penned the Zombieland script with Fleischer, had this to say about the long-rumored sequel…
We’re going on the tenth anniversary of Zombieland. Zombieland came out October of 2009. We don’t know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a Zombieland 2. The hope is that we’re shooting that thing early 2019 for an October of ’19 release.
Not finished, Wernick added the most exciting news to date…
With the original cast, by the way.
The writers went on to say that they are “sitting” on more information that they cannot release yet. However, for fans that have long awaited a sequel to the film, Wernick said that they think they will “grant their wish very, very soon.”
Perhaps the most stunning revelation is the return of the original cast. Star Woody Harrelson mentioned his desire to return for another trip through Zombieland, but only if the whole cast returned. Considering what has transpired almost nine years later among the actors, this is no small feat. While Harrelson was a known commodity at the time, Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone have since seen their careers explode. Eisenberg went on to star in The Social Network, Now You See Me, and Batman vs Superman. Stone did well for herself also, starring in The Amazing Spider Man, Birdman, and even winning an Academy Award for her performance in La La Land. Not bad for a ragtag team of Zombieland survivors.
Stay tuned as more news about Zombieland 2 is sure to break in the near future!
