EVIL DEAD BURN Review: New EVIL DEAD Entry Takes A Grim (but Still Gory!) Spin on the Franchise

There’s a new Evil Dead sequel out, and it is grim. Evil Dead Burn just hit theatres and is the latest entry of the ever-expanding universe of zany zombie demons with great one-liners and even better contact lenses.

Directed by Sébastien Vaniček (Infested), this new one follows the descendants of the man whose voice we’ve heard only through reel-to-reel recordings over the past 45 years. He was researching these evil entities, and ended up discovering (and hiding) their favorite dagger. And now they want it back.

“Lacks a bit of the quirkiness that the Raimi entries are known for […but] there are a lot of gnarly, gore-filled sequences”

Tonally Evil Dead Burn lacks a bit of the quirkiness that the Raimi entries and even Lee Cronin’s own, are known for. This tonal shift worked wonders for the 2013 remake, but here the film might just be a bit too depressed to maintain the high-octane energy we’re used to. That said, there are a lot of gnarly, gore-filled sequences, so it definitely meets expectations as one of the bloodiest franchises of all time.

There’s enough new here to enjoy, there’s enough old to call it an Evil Dead film, so really it just comes down to whether the tone of Evil Dead Burn works for you.
