Perhaps one of Tim Curry’s most iconic roles was as Pennywise the Clown in the It (1990) made-for-TV miniseries. The character’s sharp, razor edge teeth, puffy red nose and foreboding grin is one of my first memories in horror – and it stuck with me. That portrayal obviously resonated with many; we were lucky enough to catch the interview of Tim Curry this afternoon at Fan Expo Canada, and fans were dying to know about his thoughts on the reboot.
It, the upcoming feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name, is directed by Andrés Muschiettis (Mama). The film has been receiving a surprising amount of buzz, considering very few teasers have been shared of the film (up until recently). Part of the chatter is fans’ speculations surrounding how the film will interpret Pennywise the Clown, played by Bill Skarsgård. Now, I’m one of those naysayers that loves the film regardless, but- there is no arguing that the 90’s adaptation did have its shortcomings. That being said, you’d be hard pressed to find a single person who doesn’t agree; Tim Curry’s Pennywise was a chilling and deeply memorable portrayal. So, what does Tim Curry think about the new It movie? The new Pennywise the Clown? When asked, Tim Curry had this to say:
..that performance is about to be challenged.
I like [Bill] Skarsgård. I think he’s very clever. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of clown face he puts on. because it’s not an obvious clown face at all. I’ve seen the trailer and you can’t really see him at all. So I’m fascinated to see it.
Tim Curry also elaborated a bit, saying:
I hope they make the end better, because on TV I turned into a sort of giant spider. And, It was.. not very scary. Or convincing.
To that, 8-year old Kim says.. ‘That is incorrect, Tim Curry. You were deeply scary. Spider and all.’
We’ll have another article for you highlighting the rest of the panel with Tim Curry available on the site, shortly. There were some amazingly insightful moments; his inspiration as an actor, his experience voice acting for animated roles, and (a personal favorite) his favorite moments from Clue. As a lifelong Tim Curry fan, it was an unforgettable opportunity and I can’t wait to share it!
You can catch the new It in theaters September 8th. If you haven’t re-visited the 1990 version starring Tim Curry, we strongly recommend you do. It’s available to rent on Youtube or for purchase on Amazon.
