Here’s good news if you’re a Mike Flanagan fan: the announcement of Netflix’s second installment of The Haunting of Hill House (Well… The Haunting of Bly Manor) has barely had a chance to settle and we’re now hearing that Netflix is ordering another series from Intrepid Pictures team Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy. Midnight Mass is set to be a seven-episode arc about “an isolated island community that experiences miraculous events — and frightening omens — after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest”.
According to Deadline, Midnight Mass stems from a multi-year TV deal that Netflix penned with Flanagan and Macy after the team’s runaway success with The Haunting of Hill House last year. Of course, The Haunting of Hill House isn’t the first time Flanagan and Macy have been the dream team behind a horror project. Flanagan may be a bit more of a household name, but their first collaboration was actually Oculus (2014), and they’re both behind Gerald’s Game (2017), Hush (2016), and Before I Wake (2016). The Netflix deal that was signed back in February only covers Netflix-exclusive television series; Intrepid Pictures has also continued working on upcoming features such as Eli (2019), and Doctor Sleep (2019).
We’ll be reporting on any new developments for Midnight Mass over here at Nightmare on Film Street as they’re announced. For now, given established patterns in Flanagan-Macy works, we can only muse and speculate over which of their staple actors will make it into the cast, what sort of technical feats they might work into the background of the show, and what other horror projects might come out of this multi-year deal.
