No need to worry about getting lost with The Ritual, because you can soon stream it from home!
Earlier in 2017 David Bruckner’s newest film, The Ritual, created a buzz within the horror film fest circuit. After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, it did not take long for a buyer to snag it. The horror heavyweight house (say that three times fast) Netflix, purchased the film from eOne for nearly $5 million!
Netflix has a highly sophisticated algorithm used to determine their content purchases . They reportedly spent about $6 billion on content last year. Such a big price tag on one, lone horror film means only one thing: The Ritual must be good.
In the film, “A group of college friends reunite for a trip to the forest, but encounter a menacing presence in the woods that’s stalking them.” The story is based on the horror-fiction novel of the same name by Adam Nevill. The book was originally published in the United Kingdom in October of 2011. Nevill’s novel was given the August Derleth Award for Best Novel of the Year.
Falling in the vein of woodsy horror titans like The Blair Witch and The Evil Dead, this film proves it has guts. The divisive story takes its characters far from their comfort zone and refuses to let them return. One by one, the relationships between the men unravel as quickly as the strain builds up. The audience is catapulted into both familiar and eerily unknown territories of their own psyche before the men can even set up camp. Watching the tension build between each character is chilling and straining, yet ultimately rewarded come the film’s final act.
The Ritual stars Rafe Spall (Prometheus), Rob James-Collier (Downtown Abby), Arsher Ali (Line of Duty), Sam Troughton (Alien vs. Predator), and Maria Erwolter (Darkland).
