Just after their recent premiere of cult film The Endless, filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are collaborating again. This time, they’ll be directing Synchronic, a film about a bizarre drug with not-so-great side effects.
More specifically, Synchronic will follow two paramedics on the streets of New Orleans who encounter a series of grisly deaths caused by a new drug with some potential otherworldly side effects. This discovery sends the paramedics’ lives spinning. Jamie Dornan (50 Shades trilogy) and Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Infinity War) are currently in talks to play the paramedics. These two actors are two big names for the typically-indie directors, which shows a potential shift in their careers.
In an interview with Deadline about Synchronic, Benson and Moorhead said,
Being huge fans of the nuanced, brilliant work of Anthony and Jamie, this is a filmmaker’s wildest dream come true. They each possess an extraordinary depth of personal experiences, humor, and pathos that brings a massive wellspring of humanity to the battle-scarred partnership being portrayed. We’ve found the perfect collaborators to tell a bold, frightening, heartstring-tugging story.
Synchronic will be the fourth film from Benson and Moorhead, who have previously collaborated on Resolution (2012), Spring (2014), and The Endless (2018).
The films of Benson and Moorhead are typically sci-fi/horror, with a focus on the relationships between characters and how the horrors affect those relationships. Their films are more emotional and heartfelt, showing a softer side of the genre. With that in mind, it’ll be interesting to see how they add that twist to Synchronic.
Benson wrote Synchronic, with both him and Moorhead working the film with XYZ Films. XYZ has worked with the duo are all of their films. David Lawson Jr., who produced The Endless, is producing the film.
