There might be a few weeks left before the leaves fall, but The Snowman is coming. The film, directed by Tomas Alfredson, will be released on October 20th. Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson star.
When an elite crime squad’s lead detective (Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a woman on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit (Ferguson), he must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.
Besides the ominous snowmen, one of the most compelling elements of The Snowman is the creative team behind it. Tomas Alfredson, best known for 2011’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, established his horror bona fides with Let the Right One In (2008). Screenwriter Hossein Amini wrote Drive. Second screenwriter Peter Straughan won nine awards and an oscar nomination for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Martin Scorsese is Executive Producer.
Appropriately, there’s a mystery surrounding the film as well:
Who is Val Kilmer playing?
He’s listed among the cast, but has no listed character. Kevin Spacey’s bloody reveal in Se7en, or Stellan Skarsgard’s chilling under-your-nose evil in nordic noir The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo come to mind.
Renowned, talented, older actor. Film about creative, sadistic murderer. The pieces are all there, but he seems to dismiss the idea in this Facebook post:
My first day on the set of SNOWMAN in Norway. I play a very small part but it’s fun to be around great actors like Michael Fassbender, Toby Jones, and Rebecca Furgeson (sic). The wet snow came in so fast and at about 50 miles an hour- I was almost blown over the cliff!
Bit part or brutal murderer? We’ll just have to wait until October 20th to find out.
