Carolina Hellsgard’s second feature film, Endzeit (Ever After), promises a new take on the tried-and-true “zombie apocalypse” sub-genre. The film is celebrating its world premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and it sounds like it will be a treat. One unique aspect of Endzeit is that it is entirely cast and crewed by women! The press release indicates this was a deliberate decision to bring a “change-up of sensibility and approach to a genre that has often fallen into repetition and predictability.”

Endzeit takes place in Germany, after a zombie virus has devastated the population and destroyed nearly all the cities and infrastructure in the entire country. Only two cities remain uninfected, and the story follows two women who board a train to escape from the oppressive rule of one to the supposed safe haven at the end of the line.
As you would expect, things do not go according to plan. The train breaks down, stranding the two women between the cities and forcing them into a friendship of necessity. In the wilderness, they discover that a strange plant is beginning to grow from the zombies’ bodies, and a character named The Gardener informs them that the virus is not the end of the world, but the beginning of a new, better one.
Endzeit is based on a comic by Olivia Vieweg, who also penned the screenplay for the film. Director Hellsgard sounds like she has made some bold style decisions with the film, swinging for the fences with her decisions on costuming, music, and cinematography. “We deliberately chose a non-realistic and slightly elevated visual style,” she says, later adding “We wanted to make a terribly beautiful movie … like a beautiful and poisonous piece of candy.”
Ultimately, Hellsgard’s goal for the film is an environmental one, stating that it “reflects upon our future existence, how we choose to live, and what our options will be in a world where nature strikes back.” It’s definitely one we’re excited for, and we’ll have more on it as we can.
