The newly released TV spot for FLATLINERS teased a pretty huge cameo; Keifer Sutherland returns! In the trailer (below), he is revealed as one of the head doctors. It was not immediately clear if Sutherland would be directly reprising his role as Nelson from the original 1990 film, but Sutherland had this to say to Metro last July –

I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original ‘Flatliners’ but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film

So there you have it.

The Sci-Fi/Thriller stars Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Ellen Page (Inception), and Diego Luna (Rogue One). It is being marketed as a remake-hybrid-sequel to the original Flatliners (1990). The original film was directed by Joel Schumacher, and starred Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, and Julia Roberts.


Five medical students, obsessed by what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods, each triggers a near-death experience – giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife.


Flatliners is directed by Niels Arden Oplev. Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, Diego Luna and Kiersey Clemons star.

The film hits theatres on September 29th, 2017.
