Witches rejoice! This year marks the 25th anniversary of everyone’s favorite Halloween comedy classic Hocus Pocus. And what better way to celebrate than some shiny new special edition Blu-rays to add to the collection? Best Buy and Target, known champions of exclusive Blu-rays such as these, recently made pre-orders available on their respective websites. And if you’re a fan you’ll definitely want to check these out! Exact details on the transfer and special features are still unknown, but both sites have photos which reveal some really gorgeous packaging.
First up, we have the Target Exclusive Blu-ray, sporting beautiful cover art matching the film’s original illustrated theatrical poster. It comes with a 40-page(!) gallery book, which features stills from the film along with fun facts and an oral history on the characters. The price is set at $17.99 and will be released in a Target near you on Sunday, September 2nd.
Next is Best Buy’s Exclusive Blu-ray Steelbook, with some incredible cover art that die-hard fans will surely drool over. Best Buy is known for their amazing exclusive Steelbooks and this one is no exception. The case is modeled after Winifred‘s beloved book, with the inside showing the recipe for “Witches Brew” from the film. All we have is a poor quality photo to hold us over, but it looks incredible nonetheless. This one is a little pricier, at $29.99, and will be released two days later on Tuesday, September 4th (the same day as Hereditary).
Hocus Pocus Synopsis:
“Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy romp around like coked-up versions of The Three Stooges in the frantic Disney romp Hocus Pocus. The film begins in 1693 where three witches — Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary (Kathy Najimy) — are preparing a potion that will grant them immortality and eternal youth. But before they finish mixing their cocktail, the people of Salem capture them and execute them for practicing witchcraft. Before their deaths, they vow to return to Salem 300 years hence on Halloween to exact their revenge. Three hundred years later, a skeptical, newly transplanted Californian, Max (Omri Katz), explores the ruins of the legendary witches’ house and dares the witches to manifest themselves.
Disregarding the warnings of his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and girlfriend Allison (Vinessa Shaw), Max lights the Candle of Black Flame. With that, the witches reappear to wreak havoc on the town. The kids take off with the witches’ spellbook and a musty tome of hexes and recipes. The sorceresses, who will die by the morning light if they don’t recite the incantation for immortality, have to get the books by whatever means they can. So, Winifred, Sarah, and Mary hop on their broomsticks for a chase through Halloween night.”
Here’s hoping the video transfers on these will be fully restored, as the one we have now leaves something to be desired. Either way, they certainly put a spell on me with this news, and I can’t wait to willfully succumb to capitalism come September!
