HOKUM Review: Damian McCarthy’s Irish Folklore Horror is The Scariest Movie of The Year (And its Only May!)

Movie theaters are the best place to see a horror movie, especially when it’s the scariest movie of the year.

Yeah, I went there. I said it. I’m prepared for the backlash. Hokum is SCARY y’all. And it’s scary in the best way. The scares come from all different angles and they’re unrelenting. There’s tension and dread, extended sequences of spookiness hiding in the dark, jump scares that have now gotten me in two different viewings, and an utterly horrifying soundscape of creepy moans and earie groans.

Hokum is SCARY y’all”

Hokum follows a grumpy, disillusioned writer played by Adam Scott (Krampus) who goes to a small inn in Ireland where his parents honeymooned to go and spread their ashes. While there, a girl goes missing, and he tasks it upon himself to find her, even if that means breaking into the haunted honeymoon suite.

Seriously, Hokum is solid from start to finish. It has a great mystery, great scares, and some good ole Irish folklore just to add another layer on the pile.
