I can imagine it now. The lights dim as a hush goes over the crowd. I’m sure that I paid for the entire seat, but I am only using the edge. A spotlight illuminates a squared circle and the bell rings! DING! DING! It’s the Horror Heavyweight Championship of the World, Sinister’s Bughuul vs. Insidious’ The Lipstick-Faced Demon! Don’t laugh, because this Insidious/Sinister crossover may be closer than you think.
It would never be as dramatic as all that, but an Insidious/Sinister shared universe has a ton of interesting possibilities. In an interview with CinePOP, Jason Blum claims that this universe may be on the table. When asked if he has ever considered crossing Insidious with another franchise, he stated:
I hope so. I want to. We almost did Insidious and Sinister and I still feel like we might do that so, I think so. I think we’re going to cross our worlds at some point. I don’t know how yet but we’re gonna try.
It makes a lot of sense, if you think about it. The “Further” from the Insidious franchise is essentially a realm where spirits and demons lay in wait for a physical body to inhabit. There’s no better place for a Babylonian Deity like Bughuul to hang out and look for souls to devour. Although we would never get a Freddy vs Jason– style beat-em-up battle between the demons of these two franchises, it would be fascinating to watch Elise battle Bughuul or to get a glimpse of the hierarchy of evil in the “Further”.
With the Sinister franchise seemingly dead and the latest Insidious installment receiving some pretty harsh reviews (to be fair, it is crushing it at the box office, but I believe that’s more about our insatiable appetite for spookiness this past year), this crossover may be the shot in the arm that both properties desperately need. If anyone can make it happen, it’s Jason Blum, so keep an eye right here on Nightmare on Film Street for any news moving forward.
