Premiering at the Horrible Imaginings Film Festival, From Mexican-Canadian filmmaker, Gigi Saul Guerrero, is La Quinceañera. Divided into seven episodes, the ‘film’ embodies the cultural rite of passage into womanhood in a very unique, and twisted, way.
During the 15th birthday celebration of Alejandra Santos, played by Mia Xitlali, the young girl is faced with life-changing decisions that could result in either life or death. It’s a coming-of-age/revenge film that showcases the strength of women; the film shares a similar aesthetic to grindhouse icons Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. After garnering quite an online presence, receiving notable praise as well as a Gold Skull: Audience Award at last year’s Morbido Film Festival, La Quinceañera has been chosen as the feature film for the Horrible Imaginings Film Festival opening night.
Commencing on Friday, August 31st, 2018 at 5:30 p.m., HIFF will kick things off with a collection of short films surrounding reflections (literal and figurative), obsessive behaviors and madness. Immediately following at 8:00 p.m. will be the opening feature film, La Quinceañera, as it will be featured in its’ entirety; all seven episodes will be tied as a single film. The film’s co-writer and director, Gigi Saul Guerrero, will also be in attendance throughout opening night.
La Quinceañera was also co-written by Austin, Texas native Shane McKenzie, whose mostly notable for authoring horror graphic novels which include Muerte Con Carne and Wet and Screaming (featuring The Soska Sisters). Gigi Saul Guerrero has directed over 16 short films, one of which was featured in the widely popular Mexico Barbaro horror anthology (her segment was Dia De Los Muertos). She is also the co-founder of Luchagore Productions, which in collaboration with Stage 13 and Warner Brothers, co-produced La Quinceañera. For Guerrero’s quick rise to notability as a woman in filmmaking, she was recognized by the Women In Film + Television Vancouver, receiving the Innovation Award in 2016.
