Pregnancy as Body Horror is a film festival staple but this year’s Midnight program at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival has something wild ‘n’ weird for ya with Jordan Mark Windsor & Sean Wallace’s (known collectively as THUNDERLIPS) Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant. The New Zealand comedy is outlandish and unexpected and really delivers on that out-of-this-world title. Based on Windsor & Wallace’s 2024 short film Help, I’m Alien Pregnant, this goofy gross-out examination of pregnancy is a slimy and silly debut feature about the absurdity of the healthcare system, the horrifying struggle for body autonomy, and (most importantly) weird alien dicks.
We’ve all heard those wild tales of UFOs abducting farm folk for bizarre sexual experiments, but no one ever suspects the alien would be the boy next door. When underachieving twenty-something’s Mary & Boo meet each other, it isn’t exactly love at first sight, but it doesn’t take long before Boo has his pants around his ankles and he’s massaging the dangly tendrils of his extraterrestrial genitalia.
With the exception of his weird alien penis, Boo looks like a totally normal, awkward young adult. Definitely not the kind of person that shoots hot goo like a firehose, capable of melting clothing and getting someone pregnant immediately. And, no surprise, this isn’t exactly the kind of thing a simple Plan B can fix. In less time than it takes to get blood results, Mary goes from a carefree layabout to a mutated vehicle for gestation.
“…an incredibly funny debut from a pair a filmmakers with a refreshingly gross sensibility”
Hannah Lynch (The Rule of Jenny Penn), who reprises her role from THUNDERLIPS’ proof-of-concept short, is a real standout in the film, and this subgenre in general. More than anything, Mary is annoyed with the whole mess. She didn’t want to get pregnant, she definitely doesn’t want to keep it, and she’s over listening to her mom tell her that a baby will finally give her life purpose. Not to mention the fact that every health care professional from her local judgey pharmacy aid to an utterly incompetent obstetrician (played by What We Do In The Shadows standout Jonny Brugh) seems to think they know what’s best for her. No one listens to Mary. Not even when she’s screaming for help until her hair (literally) catches fire.
The supporting cast also deserve a lot of credit for their commitment to the bit, especially Yvette Parsons (The Rule of Jenny Penn) & Jackie Van Beek (What We Do in The Shadows) who play Mary & Boo‘s mothers, each taking in the shock of this sudden paranormal pregnancy in their own unique ways. It’s a real melding pot of brilliantly funny characters and absurd situations where doctors react to the most shocking pregnancy the world has ever seen as though Mary is just another first-time-mother overreacting at all the bizarre things her body is forcing upon her.
“the weirdest dick you’ll see at the cinema this year 🫣”
Depending on how you feel about pregnancy, you could argue that all pregnancy movies are body horror movies, but only Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant has a woman experience all 3 trimesters in 72 hours (not to mention all the gross slime or the electrical interference her belly causes). It’s a high-speed health crisis and a really funny debut feature from a pair a filmmakers with a refreshingly gross sensibility. And let’s not forget that this movie definitely boasts what is sure to be the weirdest dick you’ll see at the cinema this year 🫣
