While it has long been known that the upcoming Halloween sequel will ignore all of the previous films except for John Carpenter’s original, no one said they would be forgotten entirely!
While speaking to Flickering Myth, co-writer of the new film, Danny McBride, had this to say…
This picks up after the first one. The Halloween franchise has kind of become a little bit of like choose your own adventure, you know like there’s some many different versions, and the timeline is so mixed up, we just thought it would be easier to go back to the source and continue from from there. It was nicer than knowing you’re working on Halloween 11, it just seemed cooler, we’re making Halloween 2. We do [reference the other movies]. For fans, we pay homage and respect to every Halloween that has been out there.”
This comes right on the heels of producer Jason Blum’s comments that the new Halloween is a mere 6 weeks from finishing it’s first cut (no pun intended.) This will no doubt excite fans who are a little disappointed that the previous installments are being ignored. It will be interesting to see how those films will be paid homage to, considering how off-the-wall the series went throughout the years. Will we see a reappearance of the Silver Shamrock emblem from Halloween III? Will the “cult of thorn” from 6 appear? Will Busta Rhymes make a cameo?! We can certainly hope not.
As more news continues to leak out surrounding the new Halloween, one thing has appeared certain; the people behind the production are true lovers of the franchise. From reuniting the original cast and crew to paying homage to what came before, I believe fans and newcomers alike will have a great appreciation for what’s in store.
The untitled Halloween sequel hits theatres October 19th, 2018.
