The Grudge series has yet again made us terrified of showers. With the upcoming reboot finally arriving early next year after being in development hell since 2011, there has been very little shown from it. All we have received was a few stills, plot synopsis and an assurance that it will be rated R. Thank goodness for that last bit of information. But, lucky for us horror fiends the reboot of the infamous series has just released a poster and does it promise a scary time!

Originally posted on Collider, the poster it shows the iconic scene of the antagonist ghost giving a helping hand to someone washing their hair in the shower. This scene has played out in both the original Ju-On: The Grudge as well as in the 2004 American remake. This film based on the poster appears to create a grimier feel to it showing more dirt under the fingernails and a black hue to it. In the originals Kayako was a pure white onryo, so already it looks like some changes are being put into effect.

It looks like it will maintain some of the source material and screams from its predecessors but will deviate in a lot of ways. Instead this film will follow a detective and a young mother looking into why a mother killed her entire family. The house subsequently has now been stained with a curse of the pain, sadness and horror that occurred there.  So everyone who makes contact with the house is in for a scary surprise. Different already than the lonely housewife being murdered by her husband. Also still no signs of a meowing child!

Official Plot:

A house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death.

The reboot is directed by Nicolas Pesce (Eyes of My Mother). Pesce and Jeff Buhler (Pet Sematary) co wrote this retelling of the original story by Takashi Shimizu ( Ju-On: The Grudge). It stars Andrea Riseborough (Mandy), Betty Gilpin (Isn’t It Romantic?), Demian Bechir (The Nun) and Lin Shaye (Insidious).

The Grudge will be in theaters January 3rd, 2020.
