The first images and trailer of Oscilloscope Laboratories Prospect have finally surfaced. Coming hot off a big win at the SXSW Film Festival, Prospect helps to further establish 2018 as a strong year for dark, ominous science fiction. So far this year has seen Alex Garland’s Annihilation, the upcoming Ready Player One and a surprise Cloverfield release, with the promise of another October 26, 2018. Though talk of Prospect has been reserved up to now, the films was recently awarded the Adam Yaunch Hörnblowér Award at SXSW.
Much like Duncan Jones’ Moon (2009), Prospect is a character-driven story, set within a deeply fascinating world that we are only able to experience from the limited perspective our of protagonists. There are no laser battles in space, there is no big bad guy threatening to end life as we know it. Instead, Prospect brings viewers an intimate story of struggle and survival. Directors Zeek Earl and Christopher Caldwell explain that “the focus is on the people no one cares about who struggle just to forge a palatable existence. People who push into the treacherous frontiers of space, driven by economic desperation to put their lives on the line for a shot at changing the status quo.”
A teenage girl and her father travel to a remote alien moon, aiming to strike it rich. They’ve secured a contract to harvest a large deposit of the elusive gems hidden in the depths of the moon’s toxic forest. But there are others roving the wilderness and the job quickly devolves into a fight to survive. Forced to contend not only with the forest’s other ruthless inhabitants, but with her own father’s greed-addled judgment, the girl finds she must carve her own path to escape.
SXSW’s Adam Yaunch Hörnblowér Award is presented “In honor of a filmmaker whose work strives to be wholly its own, without regard for norms or desire to conform.” The late Adam Yauch was (of course) a member of the Beastie Boys, and co-founder of production/distribution company, Oscilloscope Laboratories. Since it’s inception, Oscilloscope has released many groundbreaking indie films, including the Banksy “documentary” Exit Through the Gift Shop and the holiday horror Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. Recent Oscilloscope titles include The Love Witch, November, and The Fits. Oscilloscope Laboraties was co-founded in 2008 with A24 founder David Fenkel.
Prospect is written and directed by Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell. The film stars Sophie Thatcher (The Exorcist television series), Pedro Pascal (Narcos), and Jay Duplass (Transparent) with Andre Royo, Sheila Vand, and Anwan Glover rounding out the cast. There is currently no release date scheduled.
