Well fiends, we knew this day would come. We knew a few shorts weeks ago that the first season of Creepshow we patiently waited for all year would eventually come to close- but not before receiving some pretty fantastic news. After a record-breaking first season, Shudder has renewed Creepshow for a 2nd season. It’s a Halloween miracle!

And although we must say goodbye to what has been a wild first season, it does seem fitting that this finale would effectively close out the Halloween season. It’s been a crazy ride these last few weeks and Episode Six dives deep into the madness that this anthology series has continuously brought us. These two segments feature a hilarious performance from comedy legend Dana Gould (Stan Against Evil, The Simpsons) under the direction of returning filmmaker Roxanne Benjamin (Body at Brighton Rock) as well as an adaptation of a Joe Hill original, directed by horror all-star Tom Savini (Dawn of The Dead, From Dusk Till Dawn).

“This week on Creepshow, It’s a double-feature creature-feature!”

This week on Creepshow, It’s a double-feature creature-feature beginning with Roxanne Benjamin’s Skincrawlers where an overly optimistic Dr. Sloan (Chad Michael Collins) believes he has discovered a miracle cure for obesity that is 100% effective and requires no diet or exercise. Sounds too good to be true, right? Maybe! But it’s not polite to look a gift eel in the mouth before it’s latched onto your skin and sucked all that excess body fat away to reveal the perfect you hiding underneath. This segement sounds (and is) a little on-the-nose, tipping it’s hat a little too much toward it’s final reveal but it’s fast-paced and wastes no time slithering it’s way to an ending that surely required every available mop in the janitorial closet when they called “Cut”! I had a lot of fun with this one and its quirky morning cartoon vibe, which should come as no surprise after discovering that the segment was co-written by Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series).

Sadly, we gear down quite a bit launching into Tom Savini’s By The Silver Water of Lake Champlain. Adapted from the Joe Hill story of the same name, from his new collection Full Throttle, By The Silver Water of Lake Champlain tells the story of a young girl who will stop at nothing to prove the existence of their town’s local legend (and Loch Ness Monster lookalike) Champy. Years earlier her father drowned trying to hunt the lake monster and now, after years of emotional and psychological abuse from a stepfather that showed up to spend every dime the insurance company awarded her mother, Rose sets out to redeem her father in the eyes of everyone calling him a crazy fool. It’s a slow-moving segment that tries very hard to be more emotional than it has the time for but offers up a slick, supersized lake monster very quickly, that manages to express more emotion than it’s surrounding cast in guttural growls alone.
