A horror film from a major director shot entirely on an iPhone? And self released to boot? The concept sounds insane! Or maybe it’s just Unsane.
Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Contagion, Logan Lucky) is a director with plenty of experience crafting thrillers and suspense films. So it seems only natural his next project will be horror. But Soderbergh’s plans for Unsane are anything but expected. The director plans to self release the horror feature. This will be his second attempt to make his films fully independent of a studio — after this year’s Logan Lucky. That film was distributed in partnership with Bleecker Street, and grossed almost $44 million worldwide.
What sets Unsane apart even more is that it is reportedly shot entirely on an iPhone. Soderbergh is no stranger to thinking outside the box — with experimental films like Bubble (2005) and the upcoming interactive television show Mosiac in his repertoire.
Steven Soderbergh is a director with a very vast and diverse filmography, from crime dramas like Traffic (2000), to comedies like Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and Magic Mike (2012). He made a foray into television directing with the historical medical drama The Knick (2014). His knack for moody films and tight thrillers makes him a solid fit for horror. And if anyone is able to pull off filming on an iPhone, Soderbergh would be a good bet!
Unsane stars Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharaoh, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins and Amy Irving. It’s due to be released on March 23, 2018.
Here’s the plot, via The Hollywood Reporter:
[Unsane] centers on a young woman who is involuntarily committed to a mental institution. She is then confronted by her greatest fear — but is it real or a product of her delusion?
With it’s promising cast and intriguing premise, Unsane sounds like film that horror fans will want to keep an eye on in 2018!
