The eighties were a great time for horror films. Everything was fresh and original. Crazy ideas were accepted and no one had any second thoughts on how insane they were. This definitely pertained to the sub-genre of the horror comedy. Everyone loves films that could make them laugh while screaming.  Horror films were reaching a bigger audience. People were watching horror films without realizing they were horror.

Lucky for 80’s fans, Bloody Disgusting has learned SYFY is looking to create remakes of both Killer Clowns From Outer Space and Critters. This is huge news for these franchises.

Both of these films revolve around aliens coming to Earth. Killer Clowns From Outer Space (1988) became a cult success, the film following a pair of teenagers who see a comet crash outside their small town, and discover a pack of murderous aliens who look a heck of a lot like circus clowns. Fans have clamored for a sequel or reboot of the film since the original came out and finally there is actually talk of it happening.

Critters (1986) on the other hand, did have a short franchise run (which included three sequels) but will also be receiving a chance to reignite the fanbase of these adorably furry little alien varmints.

With the success of other horror remakes like IT (2017) there is a high chance these reboots can create some revenue. That means that SYFY might be willing and able to pick up the rights to more eighties films to remake.

SYFY has already started making reboots with Leprechaun Returns (2019) coming out sometime next year on their channel. This journalist’s only question – is what tone do they plan on making these B-Movie, alien, horror comedies? Will they go more of the scary, campy route like the originals? Or totally outrageous like their continuing Sharknado (2013) series?

All we can do is hope that the negotiations go well and SYFY can get the rights. We’ll soon have Killer Klowns and Critters knocking on our door.
