There is an art to cutting an engaging movie trailer. One that gets audiences excited to spend their time with something they haven’t seen before. Or, in the case of movie trailer re-cuts, giving audiences an entirely new spin on something they’ve seen countless times.
Over the years, fans have taken some of the most popular films of the past century and edited new trailers for them, sometimes in a completely different genre. These re-cuts have turned lighthearted comedies into dark, downright creepy thrillers. While some of the most frightening films ever put on celluloid can now be viewed as screwball comedies by simply changing the music.
With a vast number of examples to choose from, we’ve selected 6 of the very best fan re-cut trailers that cast your favorite movies in a whole new light.
6. HALLOWEEN (2018)
This re-edited trailer for David Gordon Green’s forthcoming Halloween (2018) is done in the style of the original 1978 film, damaged film stock and all. While the new movie already looks plenty brutal, this down and dirty re-cut makes it look unrelenting as The Shape hunts down his latest victims.
5. JAWS (1978)
With the latest Halloween (2018) trailer getting a vintage update, this horror classic directed by the then 26 year-old Steven Spielberg (Ready Player One) received a modern-style trailer that would fit comfortably in today’s theaters. While a bit long, it nevertheless sets the stakes and ratchets up the tension with a pulsing soundtrack that barely gives you a taste of the iconic John Williams score and somehow still works without it.
4. THE HANGOVER (2009)
(Note: NSFW) Waking up in a strange city with no recollection of the night before, while one of your friends is missing already sounds like the beginning of a horror movie. But the No. 1 R-Rated movie of 2009 was anything but. So fan Richard Scott (aka Geodicus), set out to give the film a much more sinister approach, making Zach Galifianakis’ affably eccentric character Alan a chill-inducing lunatic.
3. MEAN GIRLS (2004)
Wait, so Mean Girls *isn’t* a horror movie?
2. MRS. DOUBTFIRE (1993)
One of Robin Williams’ biggest movies of his career, the actual movie is about a deadbeat dad desperately trying to stay in his children’s lives. But after one viewing of this re-cut, things don’t necessarily seem to be quite as wholesome anymore..
1. THE SHINING (1980)
So far, most of the movies on this list have been comedies re-imagined as horror. But with this re-cut, ‘The Shining” has successfully been turned from one of the scariest movies of all-time into an incredibly heartwarming drama about a family trying to reconnect.
What truly makes this re-cut standout is that as a viewer, you are waiting hesitantly for the “All Work and No Play” Jack to show up any second. Instead, you can’t help but laugh and let out a sigh of relief when Peter Gabriel’s perfectly placed ‘Solsbury Hill’ begins to play and you think maybe everything will work out after all.
