These are stressful times, so a relaxing holiday meal with family should be the perfect thing to take the edge off. Of course, that’s not the reality for many people that eat Thanksgiving dinner with the family, especially if there are, let’s call them, “political contradictions.” This seems to be the core idea behind the new film The Oath, which takes our present political anxieties, and commits them to black comedy. The new red band trailer for the film paints a pretty grim picture of what future holidays might hold.

The new film from Ike Barinholtz (Suicide Squad, Bright) takes place in a not-so-distant future where all Americans are required to take a loyalty oath, and the deadline is, not-coincidentally, the day after Thanksgiving. Barinholtz stars along with Tiffany Haddish, John Cho, Billy Magnussen, Chris Ellis, and Nora Dunn. Edward H. Hamm Jr., Raymond Mansfield, and Sean McKittrick, three of the producers behind Get Out, are also among the producers of The Oath.

Official Synopsis:

“A controversial White House policy turns family member against family member in THE OATH, a savagely funny dark comedy about surviving life and Thanksgiving in the age of political tribalism. When Chris (Ike Barinholtz), a high-strung 24-hour progressive news junkie, and his more levelheaded wife Kai (Tiffany Haddish) learn that citizens are being asked to sign a loyalty oath to the President, their reaction is disbelief, followed by idealistic refusal. But as the Thanksgiving deadline to sign approaches, the combination of sparring relatives, Chris’s own agitation and the unexpected arrival of two government agents (John Cho and Billy Magnussen) sends an already tense holiday dinner gathering completely off the rails. As timely as it is outrageous, THE OATH is a gleefully wicked reinvention of the traditional holiday comedy for our divisive political times.”

The Oath is scheduled for a limited release October 12, with a wide release planed October 19. Are you excited for The Oath? Let us know on TwitterInstagramReddit, and in the Horror Fiends of Nightmare on Film Street Facebook group!
