The horrors of dinner party secret reveals are taking a rise in the genre that it’s becoming a hefty subgenre of its own. Variety exclusively debuted a trailer for another entry of this rising subgenre in the film, Happy Times.
Happy Times takes place over the course of a Shabbat dinner at a fancy Hollywood Hills mansion, during which a toxic mix of alcohol, egos, cultural differences, lust and greed derails the evening, and things spin out of control. Secrets are revealed, relationships are tested and getting out in one piece will be the ultimate challenge.
The trailer definitely gives off the aura of a formula that we are used to seeing in a “dinner party gone wrong” feature. Hints of conflict, murder, and witty dialogue are sprinkled amongst the small introduction of the dinner guests. The dinner takes place during Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath, which begins at nightfall on Friday and continues throughout Saturday night. It is usually observed as a time of peace and renewal for the week ahead, but Happy Times definitely does not plan on giving us a peaceful experience. Israel’s top news site, Haaretz, praised the film by stating, “Every butchered body and every murder terrifies you, but also makes you laugh at the same time.”
Happy Times is directed by Michael Mayer (Out In the Dark), and was co-written with Guy Aya, making this Aya’s debut writing credit. It had its worldwide debut at the Haifa International Film Festival in Israel where it won for best script. It stars Michael Aloni, Liraz Chamami, Iris Bahr, Stéfi Celma, Alon Pdut, Mike Burstyn, Ido Mor, Guy Adler, Shani Atias and Daniel Lavid. Oh! Pen Productions’ Paola Porrini Bisson and Urban Tales Productions’ Tomer Almagor, and Mayer’s M7200 Productions act as producers. M-appeal controls the worldwide sales of the film which will be showing in the Midnight Shivers section of Tallinn Black Nights Intl. Film Festival which takes place November 15 through December 1 in Estonia.
