HEAVIER TRIP Review: Finnish Heavy Metal Comedy Returns For A Hysterical Encore Performance

The boys are back in town! Those loveable goofballs of Impaled Rektum return for an encore performance of โ€œSymphonic Post-Apocalyptic Reindeer-Grinding Christ-Abusing Extreme War Pagan Fennoscandian Metalโ€ in Finnish comedy Heavier Trip. The sequel to the 2018 cult hit Heavy Trip is a laugh out our riot and of full-on assault of metal gags & killer tracks, like a Blues Brothers for headbangers.

Heavier Trip cranks the amps up to eleven and takes Impaled Rektum on a riff-filled journey to save their guitaristโ€™s family reindeer slaughterhouse and maybeโ€”just maybeโ€”achieve true metal glory. The movie leans into its own absurdity and dives headfirst into a Viking longship filled with bad ideas, chaotic plans, and (of course) corpse paint.

โ€œโ€ฆlike a Blues Brothers for headbangersโ€

Picking up where Heavy Trip left off, the boys of Impaled Rektumโ€“ being Turo (Johannes Holopainen), Lotvonen (Samuli Jaskio), Oula (Max Ovaska), and Xytrax (Max Ovaska)- are behind bars serving out the last few weeks of their prison sentence. After sticking to their Metal principles and turning down a well-paying corporate gig, they learn that Lotvonenโ€˜s family is about to lose their home to the bank if they donโ€™t get $50,000 right quick. Which leaves the boys with only one (compromising) choice: break out of prison, bust onto the main stage at the Wacken metal festival, and save the damn day ๐Ÿค˜

Heavier Trip wades deep into the murky waters of the music industry where glittering prices and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity. Itโ€™s also loaded top to bottom with music references (like this review), including a fist fight in a memorabilia shop complete with a silicone bust of Dave Mustaineโ€™s 6-fingered hand and Spinalโ€™s Tapโ€™s Stonehenge. Not to mention some the heaviest, most brutal needle drops of the year. And bonus points for a supporting feature from Japanโ€™s Babymetal!

Heavy Trip was one of the most honest and gut-busting depictions of a band trying to find their sound, and Jukka Vidgren & Juuso Laatioโ€™s Heavier Trip might be one of those rare sequels that eclipses the original. The jokes are legendary, the songs are ruthless, it punches the music industry right in the nose, and it never gives up on its principles. Whether your heart is as black as the metal your listen to, or youโ€™re a fan of the loveable idiots getting in way over their heads, Heavier Trip is a comedic journey worth selling your soul for.

Jukka Vidgren & Juuso Laatioโ€™s Heavier Trip invades theatres November 29.
