Aint no party like a vampire party 🦇
Nick Murphy and Aminata Thiboult’s I Love Paris brings together two of modern Horror’s best subgenres: Vampires + Mockumentary Found Footage. What these two have been doing in the shadows is making a banger of an indie flick, and it’s largely thanks to Aminata Thiboult’s performance as up-and-coming artist turned bloodsucker. We are Found Footage Obsessives here at Nightmare on Film Street and I Love Paris is a welcome addition to the ever-growing canon of vamp docs. The story is a bit more of a chill hang than and propulsive engine, but the characters are great and it’s got a ton of lo-fi style.
Thiboult stars as Ami, who performs under the ingenious stage name I Love Paris. After prospects for career advancements under the conventional music model begin to look grim (gone are the days where you plays shows, build your audience, and sign a record deal), Ami figures she should probably start posting on TikTok. But as she roams the streets for Paris looking for unique backdrops to record, she unknowingly attracts the attention of something lurking in the shadows. Under the soft embrace of the full moon, and entirely against her will, Ami is transformed into le vampiré!
I was having such a good time watching Ami hustle her way in the indie music scene that I was kinda bummed when she was finally turned into vampire. So, if you, like me, are worried that the movie abandons her music career in place of Parisian vampire exploration never fear! because Ami refuses to give up on her dreams. With her new vampire master Lutéce (Leonor Oberson) stepping in to take on the managerial tasks of booking gigs and whipping up buzz for her fledgling pop star, l Love Paris is poised to take the city by storm after she secures an afterlife-changing opportunity to perform at an upcoming music festival. She also learns that sometime the fastest way to become a headliner is to eat your way through the competition.
I Love Paris is a really scrappy production and it hinges (almost entirely) on Thiboult ‘s performance. The movie has a lot of fun & unnerving vampire sequences, but the story really relies on Thiboult to carry us through. A task she is more than capable of carrying out. Ami is a dynamite character and one that feels like a real person captured on camera- the ultimate high-stakes gambit for any mockumentary. Whether your bobbin’ your head along to her tracks or your annoyed at her brat girl energy, Ami is a star and even the shaky cams know it.
