Verdict: We say check it out.
Evil Dead Burn hits theaters this weekend, and there is a scene in this movie that everybody on the internet is going to hate. I promise you right now, there is one sequence in this movie (which I don’t want to fully spoil for you here if you haven’t seen the movie yet) that horror fans are not going to like one bit. Without getting into specifics, this isn’t a nerdy complaint about the Deadites or about some franchise gripe, although there’s definitely room for both if you’re overly critical. This “moment” is something that people hate seeing in horror movies, and if you’ve seen Evil Dead Burn already, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

But the good news is that Evil Dead Burn, despitie taking it’s own distinct spin on the tone of franchise, is an Evil Dead movie through and through. Which is to say, it’s got demon/zombie/monster things that want to rip your family to shreds. That is their whole move. That’s what they’re all about, and you get a ton of that in this new Evil Dead movie.

“There is a moment in Evil Dead Burn that is maybe the grossest thing in the entire franchise.”

There is a moment in Evil Dead Burn that is maybe the grossest thing in the entire franchise. Honestly, there are a couple of really gross sequences in the movie, but one that I loved is a scene where a Deadite takes out an old lady’s dentures and licks them all up like it’s a popsicle before sticking them back in her mouth. It was so gross. I was squirming in my seat and I could hear people behind me getting ready to vomit in their hands. It was very gross, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In true Evil Dead fashion, Evil Dead Burn is wall-to-wall gory gags and gnarly brutality.

I am an Evil Dead 2 obsessive, it belongs in the pantheon of films next to Citizen Kane, or whatever else “respectable” cinephiles watch, but Evil Dead Burn is a completely different take on the franchise. This new deadite rampage from co-writer/director Sébastien Vaniček (Infested) has a whole new group of characters in an entirely original location. The good news is that it still has some of the DNA of those original movies you know and love.

Evil Dead Burn is a bit grimmer than the more fun entries in the franchise so if you, like me, appreciate the zanier stuff, then this might be a little bleak.
There’s a new Evil Dead sequel out, and it is grim. Evil Dead Burn just hit theatres and is the latest entry of the ever-expanding universe of zany zombie demons with great one-liners and even better contact lenses.

Directed by Sébastien Vaniček (Infested), this new one follows the descendants of the man whose voice we’ve heard only through reel-to-reel recordings over the past 45 years. He was researching these evil entities, and ended up discovering (and hiding) their favorite dagger. And now they want it back.

“Lacks a bit of the quirkiness that the Raimi entries are known for […but] there are a lot of gnarly, gore-filled sequences”

Tonally Evil Dead Burn lacks a bit of the quirkiness that the Raimi entries and even Lee Cronin’s own, are known for. This tonal shift worked wonders for the 2013 remake, but here the film might just be a bit too depressed to maintain the high-octane energy we’re used to. That said, there are a lot of gnarly, gore-filled sequences, so it definitely meets expectations as one of the bloodiest franchises of all time.

The 30th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival kicks off later this month, with a gargantuan program of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and all manner of genre film. The festival run from July 16 through to August 2 in the heart of Montreal, Quebec and tickets are on sale now.

As always, this year’s festival includes a ton of retrospective screenings, including a special presentation of Pontypool (2008) whose director, Bruce McDonald, will be receiving this year’s Canadian Trailblazer Award. But let’s not forgot the absolute treasure trove of new Horror to experience with one of the best genre crowds on the planet. With 125 features and over 200 shorts, it’s hard to pick only a handful of titles but below are the Horror Movies we can’t wait to see at the 2026 Fantasia International Film Festival.

The Last Footage

Courtesy of Fantasia International Film Festival

Aside from a small handful of arthouse dramas screening at Locarno and such, the national cinema of politically isolated, conflict-plagued Myanmar remains all but invisible outside its borders. Few are aware of its lively, low-budget genre-film scene, circulating mostly online or on VCDs, but writer/director Arkar Soe Oo aims to change that with his innovative feature THE LAST FOOTAGE. Myanmar’s first found-footage horror film, shot entirely in first-person POV, is possibly the first Burmese chiller to hit the global genre-festival circuit.

The events of THE LAST FOOTAGE unfold in almost-realtime, as the sun sets on the haunted Wingabar Forest and eerie howls pierce its night. That, the first-person perspective, and the absence of conventional horror gimmicks (rapid edits and bass-heavy scores, not to mention gratuitous gore and cruelty) make THE LAST FOOTAGE feel more like an immersive work of in-situ theatre. Or perhaps more accurately, like a gleeful romp with friends through a haunted-house attraction at a regional fair, with various creepy creatures leaping suddenly out of the darkness. World Premiere

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

Courtesy of Fantasia International Film Festival

Queer, polyamorous director Kris (Hannah Einbinder, HACKS) is obsessed with rebooting an outdated and overdone slasher franchise, known as CAMP MIASMA. Her complicated and woke filmmaker life is consumed by these problematic movies and especially re-casting the final girl of the original film, Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson, THE X-FILES). Billy Presley is the ultimate slasher love interest, allowing her body and performance to be a place of both pleasure and pain for Kris’ enjoyment and the meta-audience of this franchise and film. Eventually, Kris’ obsession with the final girl transforms from cinephile fixation to full-on psychosexual infatuation. Attempting to modernize a film franchise riddled with ignorant and transphobic tropes, TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA explores how complicated identity and desire is when it is informed by problematic pop culture. Canadian Premiere

Freaks Part II

Courtesy of Fantasia International Film Festival

Following the 2018 sleeper-hit sci-fi indie FREAKS and 2025’s critically acclaimed, record-shattering FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES, celebrated Canadian filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein return to their mutant roots with the hotly-anticipated FREAKS PART II. Several years after a traumatic escape, we meet Mary (Amanda Crew, of HBO’s Silicon Valley and FREAKS) and her daughter Chloe (Lorelei Olivia Mote, of NBC’s Days of Our Lives and RIDDLE OF FIRE) as they live on the road, hiding their powers and identities.

They are hunted by the Abnormal Defense Force, paramilitary police that specialize in ruthlessly exterminating “freaks” like them. Mary is fueled by revenge, determined to find the ADF officer (Lili Taylor, of THE CONJURING and OUTER RANGE) who killed her first child. There’s great chemistry between Crew and Mote as mother and daughter. There’s also inventive gore – the most we’ve seen in a Canadian film in years – that punctuates the outstanding performances and serious subject matter. Packing dazzling action and thrills, FREAKS PART II is a fierce anti-superhero thriller that skillfully conveys themes of police states, family, and finding your tribe. Cheval Noir Competition. World Premiere.

Unholy Night

Courtesy of Fantasia International Film Festival

Michael Gabriele graced Fantasia screens in 2023 with his short films GET AWAY, which won the Gold Audience Award for Best International Short, and the darkly hilarious ROOM TONE, which also garnered several wins and nominations in 2024. It was only a matter of time until he unleashed his quick-witted violence in a feature-length film, so get ready for Christmas in July with the holiday horror UNHOLY NIGHT!

Family, food and a nonna who won’t die make Christmas Eve a bloody mess for Gino and his family. This tight-knit Italian unit soon finds out that Gino and his ex-girlfriend aren’t the most scandalous things in the family when his dead grandmother comes back to “help” with the festivities. With an ensemble cast that strikes a great balance of horror, heart, and hilarity, its cast includes Marc Bendavid (DARK MATTER, REACHER), Shailene Garnett (FIRE COUNTRY, DIGGSTOWN) and veteran actor Ron Lea of the Canadian classic, CLEARCUT! Gabriele’s debut feature perfectly captures the chaos of the holidays – as Gino and his family battle an onslaught of undead relatives and lost love – all on Christmas Eve. Septentrion Shadows Section. World Premiere.

Sleep No More

Courtesy of Fantasia International Film Festival

Sisters Putri and Ida decide to visit the wig factory where their debt-ridden mother apparently took her own life in the middle of a shift, in order to understand what might have happened. Upon arrival, they meet the boss, Mrs. Maryati, who watches over a tight-knit community of employees. Horrific workplace accidents caused by overwork are on the rise, and the two young women come to a grim conclusion: the factory is haunted by a demon.

With the unsettling SLEEP NO MORE, selected for the latest Berlinale, director and co-screenwriter Edwin (winner of an award at Locarno 2021 for VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH) makes his first foray into pure, unadulterated body horror, delivering a barrage of shocking practical effects that, at times, recalls Carpenter’s THE THING. Beneath this oppressive, blood-soaked atmosphere lies a powerful critique of the horrific working conditions and pitiful wages endured to feed the insatiable monster that is capitalist industry. Official Selection: Berlinale 2026. Cheval Noir Competition. North American Premiere.

MotherWitch

Eleni (Margarita Zachariou) is a painter isolated from her wider community and consumed by unbearable grief after losing all three of her children in a senseless accident. In desperation, she enters into a Faustian pact with chthonic feminine forces to bring them back. Filmed on location in an abandoned settlement in Cyprus and making sublime use of its mountainous rural terrain, Minos Papas’ MOTHERWITCH weaves fairy tale, dark Gothic ambience, mythology, and stunning practical effects into the fabric of folk horror.

The film becomes a profound exploration of motherhood, grief, and the act of creation itself, fueled by compelling performances from leads Zachariou and Sifis Katsoulakis. The historical backdrop of English-occupied Cyprus in the 1880s adds further layers of unease and colonial violence to its richly textured world. Official Selection: Rotterdam International Film Festival 2026. North American Premiere.

For those who believe they’ve seen everything cinema has to offer, here comes Brazilian madmen Gurcius Gewdner and Gustavo Vinagre’s BOWELS OF HELL, unquestionably the grossest film of Fantasia 2026 – and also one of its wildest, most unpredictable, and hilarious. It’s not entirely a scatological humor fest, because BOWELS is also a surprisingly touching story about parents and children, and the struggle to focus on the people in your life that matter the most. It’s also filled with some of the most disgustingly inventive kills seen in any movie in some time, and it should come as little surprise that even the legendary Bruce LaBruce shows up at one point.

When you gotta go, you gotta go… but in this film’s haunted São Paolo apartment complex, “go” means that your time is most certainly up!
Fantasia’s family of returning filmmakers is large, and proudly includes director/producer powerhouse, Jenn Wexler. Her breakout debut, THE RANGER, came to Fantasia in 2018 and was followed by the World Premiere of her supernatural Christmas crime heist, THE SACRIFICE GAME, in 2023. For Fantasia’s 30th anniversary, the fest couldn’t be happier to have her back with the next chapter of the popular BECKY franchise, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF BECKY!

Becky Hooper (Lulu Wilson, THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE) has annihilated Neo-Nazis and all manner of victimizers, but this time, she’s going straight to the source! Now a CIA agent, managed by genre favorite Kate Siegel (HUSH, MIDNIGHT MASS), she’s taking down a nefarious modern-day Nazi played with camp brilliance by the one and only Neil Patrick Harris (SUNNY DANCER, GONE GIRL)! Wexler shines here, highlighting the underdog heroine and going for broke with tons of gore and crazy kills. Meanwhile, Wilson reprises her beloved character with gusto, unleashing Becky’s signature rage on an army of insane baddies! World Premiere.

A tale that mines the deepest, darkest pits of horror to explore the unfathomable fright of…..getting old.

That’s right, James DeMonaco’s The Home, starring Bodies, Bodies, Bodies co-star Pete Davidson, is a horror movie about old people, and some other weird stuff, I guess. This movie came out last year, but don’t worry if you never heard of it or didn’t watch it because neither did we! And today, using nothing more than modern Hollywood’s predictable playbook for cut + paste Horror stories, we’re going to spoil the whole movie after watching less than 1/3 of the dang thing!

If you’re a fan of It Follows (2014) or Talk to Me (2022), you might want to check out a new horror movie that’s hitting theaters this weekend called Leviticus. Basically, this movie takes conversion therapy (a real-life horror) and turns it into a supernatural nightmare.

Written and directed by Adrian Chiarella Leviticus follows Naim (Joe Bird) and Ryan (Stacy Clausen), two teenage boys in the earlier days of a summer fling. Unfortunately, the small Christian community that they live in can’t handle the thought of a gay couple in their own ranks, so they bring in a mysterious priest from out of town to perform a ritual on the boys with the promise that they will no longer lead a life of sin. Spoiler Alert: it’s because they’re cursed now! After a doomed visit from the voodoo vicar the boys are marked and followed by a supernatural entity that threatens to rip them apart (literally) if they dare steal a kiss somewhere private.

“…has a really interesting concept, and some clever twists on supernatural stories that have shocked us all…”

Like It Follows, the monster also appears invisible to everyone around them, so it almost looks like they’re interacting with a ghost when the entity sneaks its way into their lives. And to add insult to very real injury, this demon(?) hunting them down, appears to each of them as the other. In other words, they think that they’re sneaking away with their boyfriend but it’s actually a monster that’s going to strangle them and kill them in front of their family.

The film has a really interesting concept, and some clever twists on supernatural stories that have shocked us all, but sadly, it doesn’t quite reach the levels of the movies it can be directly compared to. If you liked how ruthlessly brutal or how unrelentingly scary a movie like Talk To Me was, Leviticus might be a little bit more low-key for you. I know it was for me. And I’m not generally a stickler for rules, but I also had a lot of questions about how the monster worked which left me unsure if the movie was violating its own logic mid-scare sequences.

Regardless, it’s Pride Month so if you want to go see a queer horror movie in the theater movie, now’s the opportunity.
Kane Parson’s Backrooms, the current holder of The Internet’s Creepypasta Heavyweight Belt, has finally hit the big screen. Delivering a unique take on the Liminal Horror experience, Backrooms has quietly become one of the most recognizable horror properties in the world and this new feature film delves deeper into the world of those spooky hallways than ever before. But don’t come looking for answers because you’re going to walk away with more questions than you came to the movie with thanks to A24’s patented confuse-the-hell-out-of-you movie making template.

Join your horror hosts Kimmi & Jon as they sit down to discuss and dissect the wild and weird labyrinthian world of Backrooms. Are the Backrooms another dimension? Do you go on forever or is there a beginning and an end to this nightmare realm? And (maybe most importantly), what the hell was this confusing movie even about??!?

Note: Drive Home from the Drive-in reviews are FULL SPOILERS (with a quick 15-or-so minute spoiler free review at the top of the show). Want to know whether to watch or pass without the spoil?

Verdict: The leadup to Backrooms was such a rollercoaster that we really didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t really care much at all about the movie until that first trailer dropped, and then we were hooked. The anticipation was real, the premise was super scary, but we were pretty underwhelmed by the finished product. It’s another secret A24 Art House Horror so you’re probably either going to love it or hate it. We did not love it.

And as a special treat, we’ve recorded this DHFTDI in video! Glorious color! All the dimensions! Tune in via The Fiend Club on Patreon and see all our silly facial expressions while we review the most divisive movie of the year.

The horror short that scared the entire internet is now a feature film, and it’s in the theaters this weekend. It’s called Backrooms and, admittedly, I was not super excited for this movie when they first announced it. The short didn’t hit me like it hit a lot of other people, but when I saw the trailer, I completely changed my tune. It looked super spooky and, more importantly, it looked like the adaptation of Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves that we still haven’t been given, and a property that also deals with impossible places that shouldn’t exist.

In Backrooms, a failing furniture store owner named Clarke (Chiwetel Ejiofor) stumbles into limitless real estate hidden under his store. The more he explores, the more he discovers, and it seemingly has no end. Oh, and also, there are monsters in there.

“Backrooms is bound to be one of the most divisive and debated movies of the year.”

That said, the movie is much more of an art film than I think it is advertising itself to be. Like a lot of A24 movies, it has an incredible premise and these really spooky sequences, but in the finale of the movie it becomes an unapologetic art piece. So if that’s something that you’ve been complaining about with A24 movies for a long time, heads up, you’re getting the same thing here with Backrooms. It’s got some really good characters, it’s got some spooky sequences, but it is a little bit weirder than I think a lot of people have been expecting. Even in my own screening, someone in the audience scoffed out loud, “So there’s just no ending?“.

That choice is a real bummer because the movie has a few incredible found footage sequence, proof that they can craft great scares for this space, and I think this movie would’ve been infinitely scarier if it was found footage through and through from start to finish. It is definitely a movie that’s going to spark conversation, so if you’re willing to have a chat with your friends afterward about some weird philosophical principles or whether or not humans have the ability to perceive (or create!) another dimension, then Backrooms might be the movie for you.

I don’t think this will go down as the scariest movie of the year for me, personally, but I am clearly in the minority on this one. Sold out screenings across the nation are proof that this is a property fans are hungry to eat up, and I can’t deny that it is cool to see mainstream audiences embracing the wild and weird world of non-commercial cinema. On the other hand, if you’re the kind of person who likes answers at the end of your movie and you don’t want the responsibility of doing a bunch of detective work to figure out what the f*ck the movie was about, then Backrooms might not be for you.

Regardless, the movie has some great found footage sequences so there’s definitely something in here for almost every horror fan, and I’m very excited to see what the internet thinks because Backrooms is bound to be one of the most divisive and debated movies of the year.

“This wasn’t for me, but I can’t deny that it is cool to see mainstream audiences embracing the wild and weird world of Art House Cinema.”
