There are plenty of great horror movies ahead in 2023 to look forward to, but what if you want something fresh and new to watch right now? Fret not, because even though we’re only a few months into 2023, the horror genre is already serving up some bangers!
Here are NOFS’ picks for the best horror movies of 2023… so far!
The Pale Blue Eye
Based on the novel by Louis Bayard, The Pale Blue Eye stars Christian Bale as a detective investigating a string of murders at West Point Academy in the 1830s. As he delves deeper into the case, he begins to suspect that Edgar Allan Poe (played by Harry Melling) may be involved. As you might expect from a movie with Poe in it, The Pale Blue Eye is both creepy and cerebral, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
Infinity Pool
Infinity Pool is a gripping sci-fi thriller from Brandon Cronenberg that follows vacationing couple James and Em Foster as they uncover the dark and twisted reality of the (fictional) island of La Tolca. Through a fatal accident, they discover the resort’s disturbing subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence, and surreal horrors. As the couple navigates through the chaos, they are forced to fight for survival and confront the dark secrets that dare them to explore deeper.
The Outwaters
In The Outwaters (2023), four campers venture into the Mojave Desert for a weekend trip, but their fun is cut short when they begin to hear strange sounds and observe strange animal behavior. Their trip takes a dark turn when they experience an unexplainable incident that leaves them questioning their sanity. The group must navigate through their fear and unravel the mystery of what is happening if anyone is to make it out with their lives.
M3GAN
M3GAN is a sci-fi horror with a Mattel-like twist; an AI doll that pairs with its host child to become a very protective best friend. When the roboticist’s niece starts to form a unique and troubling bond with the doll, she realizes M3GAN may be developing a dangerous level of consciousness. As the doll becomes increasingly possessive and manipulative, the roboticist must stop M3GAN before she harms anyone else. In a battle of human versus machine, the roboticist must use her skills to outsmart the doll and save her family.
Huesera: The Bone Woman
Huesera: The Bone Woman is a gripping horror film that follows Valeria, a first-time mother who is cursed by an evil entity. The curse plunges her into a terrifying world of dark magic and danger, leaving her fighting for her life and the life of her unborn child. As she delves deeper into the frightening unknown, Valeria must use all of her strength and resilience to protect herself from the malevolent forces that threaten to consume them. With a compelling storyline and a spine-tingling atmosphere, Huesera: The Bone Woman is a must-see for horror fans.
